MRA Meet Ups: Early Detection, Remote Telemedicine, and AI

On May 7th, as part of Melanoma Awareness Month, MRA hosted another installment in the MRA Meet-Ups series, where we regularly connect with the melanoma community to discuss important topics, share insights and experiences, and ask questions. The session, called "Early Detection, Remote Telemedicine, and AI", featured perspectives and commentary from dermatologist Dr. David Polsky of NYU Langone and patient advocate and journalist J.D. Durkin.

Moderated by MRA’s Director of Communications and Engagement Dana Deighton, the discussion focused on melanoma prevention and early detection, dermatological care and remote telemedicine, and the role of artificial intelligence (AI).

Topics discussed included:

  • Risk factors for melanoma and the benefits of detecting them at their earliest stages
  • The use of dermoscopy and total body photography for early detection
  • Considerations for the development of artificial intelligence methods to augment human diagnosis
  • J.D.'s experience being diagnosed with melanoma and the challenges and nuances of maintaining a healthy outdoor lifestyle
  • Mental health considerations for patients managing melanoma
  • The importance of connecting with other patients and the support from the melanoma community
  • Stigma around skin health and sun safety practices in men
